Quick Overview

Beautiful double cow hide skinned drums that make up the bass section of an African percussion ensemble. Played with a drumstick and open hand these drums have a rich booming tone.

Available in three sizes:

  • Kenkeni - 8.5 inch head - 50cm x 22cm diameter.

  • Sangban - 10 inch head - 55cm x 26cm diameter.

  • Dundun - 13.5 inch head - 65cm x 34cm diameter.

The kenkeni has the highest pitch and usually holds the rhythm together with a simple pattern. The sangban typically has a more complex part which defines the rhythm. The dundun often serves to add depth with deep, widely spaced notes.

Dunduns are also known as djun-djuns, dunun or doundouns.
